How I Caught the Global Health Bug: An Evening with Ray Suarez
Monday,
June 21st, 2010 -
Senior Correspondent, PBS NewsHour
CO-SPONSORED BY
CENTRO CULTURAL HISPANO AMERICANO

What are the most pressing and underreported global health issues of our time? What global health successes are transforming the way people live today? As we look forward, what are the emerging global health threats? What are the prospects for vaccines for today's most deadly diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis? And, why does global health matter as it relates to global development, security, economic growth, and the environment?
Suarez joined The NewsHour in October 1999 as a Washington-based senior correspondent, and has more than thirty years of varied experience in the news business. He came to The NewsHour from National Public Radio where he had been host of the nationwide, call-in news program "Talk of the Nation" since 1993. Prior to that, he spent seven years covering local, national, and international stories for the NBC-owned station, WMAQ-TV in Chicago. Earlier in his career, Suarez was a Los Angeles correspondent for CNN, a producer for the ABC Radio Network in New York, a reporter for CBS Radio in Rome, and a reporter for various American and British news services in London. Suarez holds a B.A. in African History from New York University and an M.A. in the Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. He is a winner of the Benton Fellowship in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Chicago.
With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Ray Suarez has traveled the world to report on health issues such as the H1N1 outbreak, HIV/AIDS, malaria vaccine development, and creating sustainable food supplies in developing countries. Our planned event provides an opportunity for the public to learn about why global health issues really matter when it comes to building successful communities locally and around the world.

Vista Andina is a personal look at Cusco behind the tourist or the postcard version. It is an edgy, atmospheric and authentic illustration of the region's people and their character. This book accomplishes that in a sometimes irreverent and humorous way.
Vista Andina could be translated as Andean View or Andean Perspective, the Cusqueñan community's point of view. It is a photographic journey bringing you from the Incan terraces and bountiful fields of the Sacred Valley to the thriving streets and markets of Cusco. It delves deeply into traditional festivals and popular cock fights, bringing 11 years of perspective.
Vista Andina was created to complement our understanding of Cusco; to help reinforce that Cusco is not just about Machu Picchu and the ruins around the Sacred Valley. It is an energetic and charismatic place with a proud and diverse people.
While the book tells a larger story of a region, you can find unique insight and beauty in the individual images, the people they portray and the places they present. Adam

She's taken the country's AfroPeruvian musical heritage to stages and airwaves around the world, becoming a key figure in reviving a culture that had been largely ignored within its country. Her forthcoming album, Seis Poemas, isn't quite jazz. It is a tribute to a great voice of Peru from a different era: Chabuca Granda, a folk singer who became iconic to progressive movements and musicians throughout Latin America. With sparse arrangements, Baca emphasizes the lyrics, underscoring the renown Granda had as a songwriter depicting the simple beauties of Peruvian life and culture.

You can tell this by the first unaccompanied notes of Avatar, his complexly beautiful new album. Legendary Percussionist Pete Escovedo broke down the barriers between Smooth Jazz, Salsa, Latin Jazz and contemporary music. Born in Pittsburg, CA, July 13, 1935, he began his musical journey while attending high school in Oakland, CA. At the age of sixteen, he began playing the saxophone and then discovered percussion which became his love of rhythm and his dream of playing Latin Jazz music.
Sheila Escovedo (Sheila E) was born into a musical family and at the age of 5 joined her Dad on stage for a solo in front of 3,000 people. At that moment, Sheila knew she was going to be a percussionist. Following in the footsteps of his father, Pete Escovedo, Juan started playing percussion at the age of ten. When he turned 14, he began performing with his father and fell in love with all aspects: the audience, the stage, and the excitement of playing live music. Juan became recognized by the entertainment industry, bringing to it his unique style of R&B, Pop and Latin Jazz. Before long he toured and recorded with many artists.

Poncho Sanchez’s music emerge from either side of the border. All of these sounds and more come together in Psychedelic Blues, Sanchez’s twenty-fourth recording on Concord Records (9/09). Poncho and band spin vivacious tales that pay homage to the glories of a half-century tradition that was born when Afro-Cuban rhythms merged with bebop. One-on-one, the Chicano conguero is equally expressive, recounting in vivid details the encounters, friendships, and passions that have contributed to his remarkable career as a bandleader and recording artist.
A jazz great himself, Sanchez has performed with artists Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Hugh Masakela, Clare Fisher and Tower of Power among others. On Raise Your Hand, his 22nd album for Concord Picante Sanchez and his band pay homage to some of his soul heroes, as well as reaching into timeless traditions of Afro-jazz and soul.
